Today our 8th Invitational event started.

As part of our ongoing programme to forge links with new federations and make new friends, this event includes representatives of nations new to WCCF Invitationals:: Venezuela and Cuba, alongside our regular partners: Germany, USA, Australia, Scotland, Indonesia and Panama. This brings our count to 26 Federations represented in WCCF Invitationals

New Article

Welshbase

Russell Sherwood  Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Recently an interesting conversation took place on the WCCF Facebook Group (incidentally if you want to join and are Welsh registered, get in touch!) about the number of Welsh wins against GM's.

After some preliminary research, this led to some interesting results, one being that there are quite a few Welsh players with good results against GM's, SIM's and IM's.

Creating Welshbase had a number of significant challenges:

1) Most games pre-2000 are not easily available.

2) In many older games, Welsh players are incorrectly identified as British or worse still English! (Some of this due to ignorance of the difference and in other cases due to the periods without a Welsh Federation, where our players were kindly represented by our neighbours)

3) To process the database quickly I have used some quite coarse techniques, so some errors are certain to exist.

4) Chessbase seems to have a dislike of Wales (if you search for Nationality WLS jumps to Saarland!)

5)  ICCF Titles or ratings do not show in the database.

Anyway, the ICCF Title is shown in the Annotator Column.

Currently wins and draws are included, I will add losses sometime before the next rating list and I will then update with each archive update.

SSKK vs Rest of The World

Russell Sherwood  Monday, September 17, 2018

Dear chess friends,

the Swedish Corr Chess Federation is celebrating 80 years by organizing a big friendly match, "SSKK vs Rest of The World" on the ICCF-server, hopefully on 80 boards. Starting date:  December 1

We would be very pleased and much honoured to see your country participating in this event, by having two players in the World Team:

- one player rated 2100-2600
- one player rated 1400-2099

The Swedish team will have GM:s rated 2500+ on the top 4-5 boards, and SIM/IM rated 2450+ on at least boards 6-12.
Therefore, a world team player 2500+ would be extra welcome, but equally welcome are players below 1700 since we will muster low rated players for the last boards of our team.

I would very much appreciate your kind help in forwarding this invitation.     Closing date will be October 8.

Hoping for your kind assistance in the true spirit of AMICI SUMUS

Sture Olsson, SSKK team captain

Anyone wishing to be considered should contact Russell Sherwood by the 8th of October.

British Ladies Correspondence Chess Championship 2018

Russell Sherwood  Saturday, September 15, 2018

The 2018 British Ladies Correspondence Chess Championship is underway with a number of interesting battles promised within.  Will anyone be able to upset the pre-tournament favourites of LGM Helen Sherwood and LGM Dawn Williamson?

Quote of the Day

After a bad opening, there is hope for the middle game. After a bad middle game, there is hope for the endgame. But once you are in the endgame, the moment of truth has arrived.
