e3 Poison: A 21st Century Opening Repotiore

Ian Jones - The Welsh Batman

Craig Evans  Thursday, August 2, 2018

Ian is an exceptionally dangerous player, and there is no doubt that he seems to particularly thrive in team events - Ian's best performances seem to come for the 'greater good', and he's not afraid to bloody a few noses! This game is one of my favourites (as it seems an opening I hate get decimated), and gives me the picture of a caped crusader throwing his pieces violently at the opponent. If only he could find his Robin, the Welsh Chess teams could be spurred onto even greater heights. Enjoy!

New Season: A New Hope?

Russell Sherwood  Tuesday, July 31, 2018

As the new season approaches us a few reminders:

  • Make sure you know the deadlines for entries for events you are interested in
  • Look at your current game load, how many new games can you take on?
  • Do you have an adjudication dates on any of your current games approaching? If the position is drawn then agreeing terms before the date will save work!
  • Do you know the new events coming up: (British Champs, WCCF8, Club (BCCA, SM, Natcor……), Counties and Districts, European Champs (Open and Prelim). If not then ask!

British Correspondence Chess Championship 2018

Russell Sherwood  Monday, July 30, 2018

The British Correspondence Chess Championship (BCCC) is the premier tournament on the British CC calendar. Running continuously since 1921 and open to all British players, the BCCC has carried ICCF title norms since 2016.

The BCCC caters for players of all levels and consists of a final, a candidates section and a number of reserves sections.

The BCCC is organised jointly by the English Federation for Correspondence Chess (EFCC), the Welsh Correspondence Chess Federation (WCCF) and the Scottish Correspondence Chess Association (ScoCCA).

Further details of the tournament, including the full rules and a list of previous winners, are available on the EFCC website:

http://efcchess.org.uk/bccc.html

Last season’s crosstables can be viewed here:

There is a first prize of £100 and a second prize of £50

WCCF can nominate up to 2 participants who met the entry criteria, part of which is holding a minimum ICCF grading of 2300. Those players rated less than 2300 may wish to enter the Candidates and Reserves Sections.

Entries close on August 31 and play is due to commence in September 2018. Anyone interested in entering should contact Russell Sherwood for further information. Entries and the entry fee of £10 should be sent to Russell Sherwood, both no later than 15th August 2018.

As an addendum to my prior article on tablebases it is worth knowing that 7 piece bases are now available for download.

Prior to running off looking for them, make sure your broadband is fast enough (or cooperate with friends) and your choice of engine supports them!

The location will be published here in a few weeks time. Welsh players can get in touch beforehand!

Applying Logic In Chess

Quote of the Day

After a bad opening, there is hope for the middle game. After a bad middle game, there is hope for the endgame. But once you are in the endgame, the moment of truth has arrived.
